LDL cholesterol is often called bad cholesterol because it is the main type that deposits inside artery walls. LDL particles carry cholesterol from the liver to tissues throughout the body. When there is too much LDL in the blood, or when LDL particles stay in circulation for too long, they begin to slip into the inner lining of arteries through tiny gaps in the vessel wall. Once inside the artery wall, LDL becomes chemically altered, especially in the presence of oxidative stress from smoking, high blood sugar, chronic inflammation, or poor diet. This altered LDL triggers an immune response. White blood cells called macrophages rush in and absorb the LDL particles. As they fill up with fat, they turn into foam cells. These foam cells accumulate and form fatty streaks, which are the earliest stage of plaque buildup. Over time, more LDL enters the area and the plaque grows thicker and harder. Calcium and scar like tissue are added, narrowing the artery and reducing blood flow. This process is called atherosclerosis. Unlike HDL, LDL does not remove cholesterol. Its role becomes harmful when levels are high or when arteries are already damaged. This is why controlling LDL is central to preventing heart attacks and strokes. #health #healthy
