You're gambling. My wife has always been the picture of health...until recently. Diagnosed with Stage III ovarian cancer. She's a teacher and has UMR health insurance. Since May, three chemos have racked up $200k in medical bills. She'll have surgery in a couple of weeks followed by (at least) 3 more chemistry. Bc she had UMR, the total out of pocket maximum was $4000 (in addition to her monthly premium). Without insurance this would've wrecked our savings. She's 62.

I would have to pay for insurance. My husband was always healthy, had a stroke at 55 and he was getting over Covid so they said it was from having Covid as he has no other health issues to cause the stroke. His bill was over 300k and our cost was the 5k out of pocket max. We’ve never had any other major health issues but all it takes is one time and it could be devastating. We plan on retiring before 65 and will need to pay a few years. I’m saving in our hsa and plan on using that for our premiums.

Not shocking at all, I haven’t had health insurance in over 20 years, the naturopaths I see are not covered by insurance. If something was to happen I would use self pay and payment plans to cover the cost.

Where do you go to get exams that accept self pay?

Ok well 2 lumpectomies, radiation, doctors visits, medication 70,000 dollars. I was healthy, no meds, ate very healthy, exercised then boom, at 68 breast cancer. I have insurance, 3 years later bills are still coming in. Insurance covered most of it.

Everything’s fine until it suddenly isn’t, within the last 3 1/2 years I’ve had two occasions where a health issue was found incidentally due to having a test for something else. The 2nd one was a big one and completely unexpected! Without insurance I’d be screwed . Best of luck to you …….

Yes it’s a roll of the dice. I am also healthy but have also had emergencies and ended up needing surgeries and my child got cancer. We are all one car wreck away from total financial destruction. I still support your decision because we are all different and you have free will! The insurance industry is deplorable.

How do you pay for your annual mammogram? Colonoscopy by age? Annual blood work?

Under a $100??? My son had to go Friday $295 doctors visit $500 MRI & $680 for bloodwork and then another $250 for doctor return for MRI & bloodwork results. Not sure what state you live in. Definitely would not recommend going without insurance

Don’t blame you. Self pay is cheaper. If we would all do self pay then the doctors would have to compete with one another which would reduce the price of procedures.

Rush Limbaugh always said if we paid cash for doctors appointments, etc. if everybody paid cash and got the insurance companies out-of-the-way, the cost would be minimal because you won’t have to deal with insurance red tape and BF

I wonder what self pay rate is for emergency gall bladder removal. Required ER visit and scans. Then surgery first thing next morning.

Bravo! I have it but never use it. I don’t want it but I feel like if I stopped paying into it at work, something would happen to make me need it. An accident or hospital stay can literally take a person’s entire savings. Random things can happen.

Medicare is for older people. Medicaid is for younger. You should qualify for state insurance-Medicaid for under 65. You qualify btw you don’t look anywhere near 65 the people in this comment section need an eye exam.
