@pbsnews: One of the deadliest forms of cancer for women may not start where we once believed. Researchers now know nearly all fatal ovarian cancers begin in the fallopian tubes, not the ovaries. Stephanie Sy discusses with Dr. Rebecca Stone, a professor in the Johns Hopkins Medicine Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, how this understanding is important for patient care. #pbsnews #pbsnewshour #newshour #news #ovariancancer #womenshealth
I hope bilateral salpingectomy will be fully covered in the future

I don’t like how it’s spoken about as “for those who don’t want MORE children”. How about we just let people decide for themselves, whether they have children or not.

Great discovery! But not covered by insurance or offered at a significant reduced rate doesn't help 😮💨

great idea, horrible timing. in this political environment no doctor is going to do that sadly. hell even before you needed to damn near sign your name in blood to get a hysterectomy

I’m getting my tubes removed at 26 (no children) and my doctor actually told me that it would lower my ovarian cancer risk which was welcomed news to me!

This makes me sick - why does she keep saying they need to have children? If this was for men, they’d offer it.

As someone who's grandmother had ovarian cancer, this gives me hope. If I have to go into debt by removing my fallopian tubes, then so be it. 🤷🏾♀️I haven't given birth and I'm in perimenopause.

I wish they’d spoken about this when I had my gallbladder removed in 2016.

Will insurance pay for this prevention if I ask for it.

it should be standard that when a woman decides she doesn’t want kids anymore whether she has had 8 or she has had 0 she should get them removed and insurance should cover it.

I had my tubes removed during my last child’s delivery. I did it for sterilization but heck yeah, double benefit. 👍

Had mine removed this year. It was 100% covered by insurance, didn’t even have to pay the deductible bc it’s considered “birth control” (for now!) so if you’re considering it, HIGHLY recommend doing it soon. Easy procedure, have had periods more painful and went to a wedding 3 days later. 6 mo later and my “scars” look like cute freckles.

My ovarian tumor was bigger than a grapefruit when it was detected. Aggressive cancer, aggressive treatment as well. I had no symptoms at all!! 😔

I will forever be grateful to my amazing OBGYN who performed my salpingectomy. Best medical decision I have made for myself to date.

My GYN told me about this so she told me if I’m willing, she’d like to take the fallopian tubes when she took my uterus out. We left my ovaries. I was 49 when I had it done 3 years ago. So happy agreed.

I had my bisalp when I was 22 years old, for the purpose of sterilization. To this day, it's the most beneficial medical decision I have made for myself. Highly recommend.

Best choice I ever made was my bilateral salpingectomy. I did it as a permanent birth control. Zero regrets and it was 💯 covered by my insurance because I told them it was for birth control.

Bilateral salpingectomy is covered under ACA-compliant health plans at NO COST if billed appropriately by the provider for sterilization purposes (it gets murky when combined with other procedures, which is what this video emphasizes). Please research and save information you find on r/childfree and r/sterilization. If you don’t want kids and have fallopian tubes, this is something you’d want to do sooner than later. Bonus: if you want kids later you can technically still do so via IVF.

Had my tubes totally removed two years ago. I was 22 at the time of my consultation, no kids, no spouse, and my doctor agreed to complete it. Insurance covered the full cost. In the USA most insurance WILL cover elective bilateral salpingectomy as a permanent birth control. unless you have an insurance plan that was grandfathered in after the aca took effect you can likely get it covered. There's a reddit for sterilization that has SO many people who have posted how to go about insurance issues. If you want it done, there's lists of doctors across the country who will preform a removal of the tubes. Definitely worth looking into.
