Why You Should Not Kill Yourself
There are moments in life when pain can become so overwhelming that death starts to look like the only way to make it stop. When someone is hurting deeply, it can become difficult to imagine a future that feels different from the present. The mind can convince a person that nothing will change, that they are a burden, or that everyone would be better without them. But those thoughts are not proof that life is hopeless. They are signs that someone is hurting and needs support.
One of the most important reasons not to kill yourself is that what you are experiencing right now does not have to be what you experience forever. Feelings can change, even when they feel permanent. Situations can change too. People leave relationships, find new friends, move to different places, discover new interests, recover from failures, and build lives they once could not imagine. You do not need to know exactly how your life will get better. You only need to leave enough time for the possibility that it can.
You also deserve the chance to experience things that have not happened yet. There are conversations you have not had, places you have not visited, people you have not met, songs you have not heard, jokes you have not laughed at, meals you have not tasted, and ordinary mornings you have not woken up to yet. The future contains experiences that cannot be predicted from the worst day of your life. Giving yourself more time leaves the door open for those experiences.
Another reason to stay is that you matter to other people, even if your pain is telling you otherwise. Sometimes depression, loneliness, or despair makes a person believe that their absence would make life easier for everyone else. But losing someone is not the same as removing a problem. Your death would affect people in ways you cannot fully predict. Friends, family members, classmates, coworkers, neighbors, and even people you may not realize care about you could be left carrying questions, grief, and memories. You do not have to earn your right to stay alive by being useful to anyone. Your life has value simply because it is your life.
You should also not make a permanent decisio
