Really proves my theory that middle management almost exclusively attracts sociopaths

Can we just start exposing these companies? Like what is the point of this if we aren’t publicly shaming these people

FMLA applies to an employee who has a spouse that is ill. This is exactly what it was meant to apply to. That’s why this was illegal from the get go. He’s protected for a minimum of 12 weeks every year (some states provided more time) and the employer cannot deny requests for time off for any reason if it is for the spouse’s medical issues.

as a manager, I do not decline PTO. if someone's gone and we're busy, we'll figure it out. That's what good management does.

You know that women undergoing cancer treatment are being prepared for the possibility of their partner leaving them. This type of workplace pressure probably contributes to these horrifying decisions.

The day my wife got diagnosed with cancer I could not concentrate at work. My manager noticed so I told him. He immediately told me to go home and be with my wife and that he would figure how to cover my work and not to worry about anything. That is what real leadership looks like! I aim to model his behavior as a leader myself. (BTW, my wife has been cancer free for 20+ years now).

In Ohio it would be completely legal for a manager to do that. It sucks in at will. States

When my mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer her employer kept her on salary and benefits when she wasn’t able to work for the last year she was alive. Her employer even came and built a wheelchair ramp and occasionally send employees in a company car to help take her to appointments. Because of that my step dad was able to stay home full time and take care of her. It was a locally owned Ford Dealership. She worked there 20+ years.

I have a progressive neuromuscular disorder and my husband told his boss when he started working there 8 years ago that he needed to be there for all doctor’s appointments, his boss agreed. Himself never sick. Until may he got a extremely rare combination of abscesses and infections in his throat and ended up in the icu. His boss made sure someone was there to take me and pick me up from the hospital and made sure there was food every night for me and my son and called me every day even offered financial assistance if needed. That’s how a boss needs to be. And it’s why my husband is very loyal to his boss.

That’s why I - as the compliance officer for my company - made a policy that ALL new leads, supervisors, and manager are required to take management-specific training. We don’t want anyone pulling 💩 like this and we don’t want to lose good people because someone pulled 💩 like this.

My old boss complained about an employee taking off while his wife had heart surgery. The boss said "He doesn't need to be there. Its not like he's a surgeon!"
This was the same boss who told me "we sometimes have to make hard choices between work and outside life." and that i really needed to "consider my priorities " when i told him I was going to go be with my uncle as he had to take his wife off life support. I went and sat with my Uncle as his wife passed and told my boss we could talk about when I was back. I think HR got to him before I did.
