Students at the University of New Mexico just marched in solidarity with Jane Doe. Not Cornell students. Not Ithaca residents. New Mexico. Dozens marched across campus chanting “We are Jane Doe” and “No means no.” Students, faculty and community members participated, and some demonstrators openly called for fraternities to be disbanded. One student said the Cornell case was a reminder that rape culture is not confined to one elite university on the East Coast. And then, almost on cue, The Guardian published a national examination asking the question universities have spent decades politely stepping around: Should fraternities be shut down? The article points to the 2019 Association of American Universities survey, where a quarter of undergraduate women reported nonconsensual sexual contact and fraternity houses were identified as the setting where it was most likely to occur. Then there is Cornell’s own history. In 2022, Cornell suspended fraternity social events after reports of sexual assault and multiple suspected druggings at fraternity-affiliated residences. Cornell’s Student Assembly later passed a resolution condemning Greek life, specifically citing five reported druggings and two sexual-assault reports over a matter of days. Fast-forward to 2026. Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff says the university will take a “serious look” at the role of fraternities and sororities. But Cornell is not currently considering eliminating Greek life. Of course not. Because apparently after years of warnings, suspensions, investigations, policy changes and national outrage, we have arrived at the bold institutional breakthrough of… looking at it seriously. Again. Meanwhile, the conversation has escaped Ithaca entirely. Students hundreds of miles away are marching because they recognize the pattern. And universities should be terrified of that. Because once people stop asking, “What happened at Cornell?” and start asking, “Why does this keep happening around fraternity culture?” the conversation gets much harder to contain. #cornell7 #janedoe #greeklife #campusaccountability #sexualassaultawareness
