Let’s be very clear: the GOP—and plenty of people who claim they’re suddenly passionate about “protecting women’s sports” by keeping trans athletes out—often don’t show that same level of concern when it comes to actually investing in women’s sports. Ask them why women’s college athletic programs have historically received fewer resources, less investment, worse facilities, and less promotional support than their male counterparts. Ask them why women athletes had to fight for decades just to get anything resembling equitable treatment under Title IX. And if you suddenly care so much about women’s basketball, ask why the WNBA spent years operating under dramatically less favorable media-rights economics and player compensation structures than the NBA. You don’t get to ignore women’s sports for decades, then suddenly declare yourself their biggest defender the moment trans people become the political target. If you actually give a fuck about women’s sports, then support women’s sports—fund them, promote them, watch them, and advocate for the athletes whether or not there’s a culture-war argument attached.
