I actually didn't know I was doing it😂 because my character grew up around discrimination even around her own family, and then at the age of 11 got sent to another country for boarding school having pushed and treated like something wrong just because she's more powerful then any other man. so she relies heavily on her strength to keep her protected as well as set the boundaries, she's very aggressive and and deeply rooted in being independent. because everyone treats her like she's fragile, a freak, a monster and out of control. she had always relied upon herself to archive what she wants. when years later in adult years after finding a guy who treats her like an equal. he tries to help her but she doesn't want him to and actively shows she needs help but is refusing too ask for help or refusing to let anyone help.

I like planting the seeds and then when checking the flashback (non linear story telling, going back and forth between past and present) people get to connect the dots in a "so that's why" fashion.

my character can smell smoke when no one else can, they were in an extremely big house and he noticed there is a fire way before anyone else did, when he was a kid his father used to burn him every time he smoked:) even when the kid did nothing wrong...

This is one of the reasons I was thinking about past of my characters before I started to work on writing them in the present time :) I have characters who's past is important to the plot, so I need to show it at some point too, but it doesn't work for everyone in my story. I have at least 2 characters from my main group, who don't have any flashbacks at all, everything about them is visible in their relationships, behavior, triggers etc. One of them is an aristocrat and because plot already shows how aristocrats are raised in this universe I don't need to show it twice, I prefer to focuse on effects it had on this person. With second one - he is an extroverted one, but never shared anything about himself directly. But the place main group met him, what he was doing, how he is reacting to people, what he wanted to achieve, who became the clostest to him etc. All of that gives clues of what he went through.

I just wrote a seen where a person reveals backstory to tell another character that they will be better in comparison. Cheesy, but it’s how i do it in real life. And old school movies do it well.
