@whileyouwonder: Meltdowns aren’t part of the autism diagnostic criteria. Neither are shutdowns. 👀 Which is WILD when you consider how often they’re talked about as part of the autistic experience. They’re very real. They can be incredibly intense. They’re common in the autistic community. But you can be autistic and never have a meltdown or shutdown in your life. AND you can be having them without realising that’s what they are, especially if your idea of a meltdown is based on what autism supposedly “looks like” from the outside. Sometimes it’s crying uncontrollably. Sometimes it’s snapping because you physically cannot take ONE MORE THING. Sometimes it’s “I don’t know” to every question because your brain has simply left the building. Sometimes it’s going quiet, losing words, staring into space, or desperately needing everyone to STOP TALKING TO YOU. None of those things make you more or less autistic. 🧠 And yep, I mean both the DSM-5-TR AND ICD-11. Meltdowns, shutdowns and emotional regulation difficulties are not explicitly part of the diagnostic criteria for autism. If you’re currently in the “wait… could I actually be autistic?” stage, hi 👋 That’s basically my corner of the internet. Follow along for autism without the stereotypes, or check out my Self-Identification Program in my bio if you want some actual structure around figuring this stuff out. 💛 #actuallyautistic #autisticadult #latediagnosedautistic #autismtraits #neurodivergent

So I do all of those things but put it down to ADHD. What's the difference between an ADHD meltdown and an autistic meltdown?

So what's the chance I 100% experience these and am not autistic? Like, does this sort of thing happen to allistics at all?

Had a lot of meltdowns as a child mostly crying - no screaming tho. I was called a “whiny child”. As an adult I self regulate by leaving what’s triggering me, and blocking it by stimming or loud music in headphones. My triggers are often repetitive sounds, even including people talking for too long, sniffling, coughing etc.

Sometimes, when im overwhelmed, I physically cannot talk. Its difficult to describe. Like I sat down at a table full of people at a function and froze. No words formed.

When I was a child - I had ‘strops’. Then when I was a young adult these were ‘panic attacks’. Only when I was 37 did I realise these are actually meltdowns 😅 🤯

It can also look like extreme frustration or feeling lost too. I had one once because I had been researching platforms and every one of them were missing something so simple that I couldn’t believe these companies couldn’t see it. And I was extremely frustrated because I wasn’t able to create what I wanted because of it. Lost it on that one. 😂 Thank you 🙏🏻💗

I was away for work last month. It was very stressful, but I held it together, but had a melt down at the weekend after I got home. My wife didn't speak to me for 5 days, and I deserved it. Next week, the same trip is coming up and I'm dreading it.

I just cried real tears, I have never ever heard anyone else use the term ‘my brain is on fire’ I genuinely don’t know how else to explain this to my husband 😭 I think this is my sign to finally get assessed

“My brain is on fire” sounds interesting. I had that experience a few years ago, told my doctor & got sent for scans. Nothing malicious fortunately, but wondering now if I was having a break down. I did have a breakdown eventually, but it was a different experience.

I learned i was after both my kids were diagnosed at very young ages, and then while working in a daycare I was having meltdowns every other day, there was more to it than just that but it was not a fun journey to discovery, and basically everything you said as an example I experience, ive learned to work with my system and stop fighting it, getting so much better at thriving instead of just living now 😊
