@meghannmcuniff: Prosecutors in Lindsay Clancy's murder trial today highlighted her inquiry to her psychiatrist about possible ketamine therapy. Clancy asked psychiatrist Jennifer Tufts about ketamine in emails on Jan. 11, 2023, 13 days before she killed her 5-year-old daughter, 3-year-old son and 8-month-old son in what prosecutors say was premeditated murder but her lawyer says was a psychotic act caused by postpartum mental health problems. "I mentioned that it's a great option, but it can be hard to get the insurance coverage for it. Usually, you need to have demonstrated that you've tried four different antidepressants first, and so that it might be necessary to try another medicine first," Tufts testified this afternoon (Friday, August 7, day 9) in the jury trial in Plymouth County Superior Court in Massachusetts. Sprague read Clancy's email aloud: "I'm still feeling a very low mood, no motivation, just very depressed. This has been going on for months now, and I'm getting desperate for something that would work quickly to get me out of this depressed state." "Had she indicated thoughts like that to you before, wanting something that would work quickly to help her feel better quickly?" Sprague asked. "I mean, she may have said that once or twice," Tufts answered. Prosecutors say Clancy resisted treatment plans, and Sprague appeared to put elicit the testimony about Clancy's ketamine inquiry to further portray her as a rogue mental health patient who didn't want to follow plans and recommendations. Tufts, however, said ketamine "was something I had considered because at this point she was starting to be a bit treatment resistant, and ketamine is a treatment for treatment resistant depression." "So it's a reasonable thought, but I didn't think we were at that point yet," Tufts testified. Clancy saw Tufts 14 times between September 2022 and January 2022. Tufts prescribed her Zoloft (Sertraline) at their first appointment in September 2022, then Ativan (Lorazepam) in October 2022 as a short-term, as-needed medication for escalating anxiety. She recommended Hydroxyzine and Buspirone (BuSpar) to taper off Ativan and prescribed Valium (Diazepam) "because of that rebound anxiety with the Ativan," Tufts testified. Meanwhile, Clancy took other medication prescribed to her at South Shore Prenatal Clinic, including Trazodone, Prozac, Seroquel and Remeron with Klonopin.
