@naderaccountancy: Can you write off a business meal just because you talked about work? 🍽️ Meal write-offs are one of the most misunderstood areas of business taxes. There’s plenty of advice online suggesting that almost any restaurant bill can become a business expense if you mention business, call it a meeting, or pay with a business card. But a business meal deduction isn’t based solely on what you call the expense. The circumstances, purpose of the meal, and connection to the business all matter. In this video, we’re talking about business meal write-offs, common misconceptions, and why the line between a business expense and a personal meal isn’t always as simple as people make it sound. #tax #writeoff #businessexpense #IRS #CPA

I mean the reality of it is that the IRS is just going to look at the total on the P&L and ask if the number there is reasonable for your industry.

I always thought food was 50% write off as long as it was bought during business operation anyways? I never write off food because I have enough write offs as it is and I rarely eat out while working but I still always assumed I can write off any meal as long as it was bought while I was working.

In fairness, it doesn't matter what percent of time you actually discussed business during the meal. What matters is that there was a bona fide business purpose for the meal and a bona fide business purpose for every attendant. So long as that happened, it doesn't matter that your 90 minute meal only had 5 minutes of actually discussing business. Conversely, that meal he's talking about getting on his way home from work is absolutely not deductible. There's no business purpose for the meal at its face, and it's during his commute home. Commuting travel is personal in nature, regardless of any stops made along the way.

So how would you prove that it was a business related meal? I know that with drug reps they have you sign something like they did talk to the doctors about a drug they are promoting. I think they also log mileage and save receipts.
