People forget that the Civil Rights act wasn’t passed because of non violent protest. It was passed because after the assassination or Dr King, there was such a revolt in the streets that 1 week after they passed the Civil Rights Act of 1968.

I love this man, but he was looking at boycotts in the completely wrong light. They don’t have immediate effects on something small like a bus back in his day, but Boycotts are violence against capitalism if effective. They have nothing to do with the empathy of the enemy and I think his personal issues with MLK impacted his decision making on boycotting requiring your enemy to be empathetic. Quite the contrary, it’s irrelevant how your enemy feels. Withholding your buying power in a coordinated attack is one of the many steps in how the proletariat becomes a dictatorship.
