WHY DOES ZIMBABWE 🇿🇼 TAX EVERYTHING? Zimbabwe has a $23.4 billion public debt. 60% of its population lives on less than $3.65 a day. The average salary is $250 a month — and a family of six needs $440 just to eat. And yet, on January 1st 2026, the government added more taxes. VAT went up. Digital services got taxed. Gambling taxes tripled. Here’s the paradox nobody talks about: Zimbabwe’s tax-to-GDP ratio is only 7.2% — technically one of the most undertaxed countries in Africa. So how do citizens feel crushed by a government that collects so little? In this video essay, we go looking for the answer — starting at Beitbridge, the busiest inland border post in sub-Saharan Africa, where it costs $112 just to cross with a car. We trace the half-built highways, the 55+ taxes, the collapse of the middle class, the Chinese cash buyers pricing locals out of Harare, and how that same story is playing out in Cape Town and London. We look at what a $1 billion highway and an $88 million interchange actually deliver. And we ask what it would take for a country with this much human capital, history, and potential to finally get a return on what its people are paying in. This isn’t a story about a country beyond repair. It’s a story about a country that shouldn’t be this hard to live in — and what redirection, not reinvention, could look like.
