Here’s what I tell everyone that’s that’s starting their own business! No matter what type of business it is I feel that these principles apply. Tip 1: DO NOT go buy new equipment! There’s no need. Just go get some decent used equipment that will get the job done and be way cheaper. If things work out then upgrade later. Right now you have no idea if things are going to go as planned. So save your money. I’ve seen too many guys spend all their money on new equipment and then only make it a year. Tip 2: Find twice as many customers as you think you need. Every year we have new people commit to using us the following year but when the time comes they never call… 😬 I would estimate only half follow through if that. It’s super frustrating but just part of the game. Tip 3: Do not be the cheapest guy out there! Just don’t! If you’re undercutting everyone you are going to upset everyone else in the industry and they’ll hit back hard. Secondly, you’ll get stuck with all the customers that are only there for your price. They’ll squeeze you for all you’re worth, find any excuse to not pay, fight you on prices increase, and then leave you as soon as there’s someone cheaper.
