Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in July 1966 in New York City to spread the teachings of Sri Krishna, Bhagavad-gītā, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and bhakti-yoga. ISKCON teaches that every living being is an eternal spiritual soul whose natural position is to serve Krishna with love and devotion, primarily through Hare Krishna chanting, japa, kirtana, Deity worship, spiritual education, devotional service and prasadam. Its activities include establishing temples and spiritual centres, conducting kirtanas, festivals such as Janmashtami and Ratha-yatra, Sunday Feasts, Bhagavad-gītā and Bhāgavatam classes, youth and community programs, book publishing and distribution through the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, vegetarian/vaishnava restaurants such as Govinda’s, Food for Life and prasadam distribution, disaster and food relief, schools and educational institutions, farms and eco-villages based on “simple living, high thinking,” sustainable agriculture, and cow protection through farms and goshalas.
