Not that I’m fully sure it applies in this situation, but at will states although can fire whenever they want without reason, if they do give a reason it needs to be legal. Otherwise it’s still considered a crime regardless of it being an at will state

even though California is an "at will" state, there still has to be lawful reason to fire an employee. only exemption is if the employee is in the trial/probation period. unless there's a dress code or rule in the employee handbook that the drag queen is going against, there's no legal ability to fire the employee
