He participated in World War I as a staff officer. Western Front (1939-1940): He commanded the German Fourth Army during the invasion of Poland and France. Thanks to his rapid military successes, Hitler promoted him to the rank of Field Marshal in July 1940. Invasion of the Soviet Union (Operation Barbarossa): He led the Fourth Army in the attack on Russia and fought fierce battles to reach Moscow.
