They face Illness, injury and the possibility of being purchased for slaughter and taken to the slaughter holding facility where they await shipping to the Canadian plant Richelieu. We are the bridge from the unseen auction/slaughter pipeline to the public and rescue organizations who can’t attend. We also offer proxy bidding. You can help them before they wind up in the slaughter holding pen. Horses arrive at the New Holland auction from all across the country, coming from numerous states, auctions, and holding pens. It is the largest horse auction east of the Mississippi and is attended by the only kill buyer with a contract to the processing plant in Canada. As horses move through the pipeline, they lose their identities. Their histories disappear, and they become nothing more than a hip tag number. Against all odds, one of our team members, Lara, uncovered a remarkable piece of Nelly’s past. While watching an archived livestream from the Interstate Regional Stockyards sale in Cuba, Missouri, she spotted a familiar face a beautiful chestnut and white Paint mare with unmistakable markings. It was Nelly. At the auction, the auctioneer described her as a “5 or 6 year old, shod all the way around, supposed to be a little barrel mare,” and the bidding began. At that point, she showed no sign of the devastating injury that would later threaten her life. Somewhere in the pipeline, however, Nelly suffered a horrific injury that covered her entire fetlock joint. Just a short time later, she had travelled over 1,000 miles and about 13½-14½ hours but with a truck and horse trailer allowing for fuel, food, traffic a more realistic trip would be 15-17 hours. This is why horses loose weight and look so dehydrated. This was just one step in the pipeline who knows how many other trips, auctions and holding pens she has seen. Most of this time they are without hay and water. Arriving at the New Holland auction she was consigned which is where Pipeline Pulls found her. Had she not been pulled that day, she would have simply disappeared becoming another heartbreaking statistic. Nelly’s injury was severe and painful to look at. Many bidders passed her by because of it. Pipeline Pulls team member Selina raised her hand and secured the winning bid, giving Nelly the chance she desperately needed. Our veterinarian met us at the farm, and Nelly’s healing journey began. Throughout her treatment, she proved to be the perfect patient kind, cooperative, and incredibly resilient. Today, Nelly is a healthy, beautiful 6 year old Paint mare standing 14.2 hands tall. After spending a lot of time with us, her injury has almost completely closed and healed. She has been evaluated multiple times and has impressed us every step of the way with her willing attitude and dependable nature. Nelly has both beauty and brains. She rides western or bareback with confidence and has been ridden both alone and in groups. She gets along well in a mixed herd and enjoys the company of other horses. She clearly prefers living outdoors and is happiest with turnout rather than being in a stall. Because we know very little about her past, we suspect she may have spent considerable time stalled, as she developed a habit of weaving out of boredom. Nelly has overcome incredible odds and has shown us just how special she is. Now all that’s missing is a family of her own. She is ready to leave her past behind and begin the next chapter of her life with someone who will love and cherish her forever. Nelly is looking for her happily ever after.
