We voted in the 90s for the proposed Scottish government to have tax varying powers, with a decent majority in favour. I'm one of the high tax payers and although nobody likes paying tax and the cost of living is definitely biting, I feel overall we get value for the extra paid and the things that are "free" like prescriptions and school meals do a lot to level the playing field. Nobody choosing which of their medications they can afford which was my own scenario in the 90s.

So that marginal change in income is compensated by a better public service offer. The drama comes from those who may not access those better public services, feel cheated.

I earn around £70,000 per annum, I’d happily pay 1 or 2 % more if the tax threshold was raised to £15,000.

Eye test is marginal and once every 2 years generally… as is prescriptions, you get a 12 month PPC in England for £114 ish. The SNP scream free free free… but it ain’t free really is it

Free school meals until Primary 5, regardless of income. Right to music education for all children through the councils music education service. Right to access free period care products. Access to adult personal care. Free bus travel for U22 and over 60s. Baby boxes. Dental check up. Does it bug me that my colleagues down south have greater take home pay? Sometimes. Is a typical family of 4 £12000 better off for the privilege? Yes. Does it level the playing field for people who need it most? Yes. As any progressive tax system should. Do the bands need revisiting with the rise in inflation? Absolutely they do. Will they be? Of course not.
