@bkbs12345: They technically didn’t officially ratify the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery in the United States, until 2013. The state originally rejected the amendment in 1865, but 130 years later, in 1995, the legislature voted to ratify it. The problem? The state apparently never sent the paperwork to the U.S. Archivist, so the ratification was never officially recorded. It wasn’t until 2013 that a professor discovered the mistake and they finally submitted the paperwork, making its ratification official. To be clear, slavery had already been illegal since the 13th Amendment took effect in 1865, the state simply took an absurdly long time to officially ratify it. So they basically voted to ratify the amendment in 1995 and then forgot to turn in the paperwork for 18 years. #maps #usa #geography #funfacts #memes
