The Most Reverend Daniel Deng Bul Yak (born 2 January 1950) is a South Sudanese Anglican bishop who served as the fourth Archbishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church of Sudan from 2008 to 2018. Following South Sudan's independence in 2011, he became the first Archbishop of the Province of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan and Sudan. He is widely recognized for his leadership in evangelism, church growth, peacebuilding, and national reconciliation. Born in the Twic area of Bor, present-day Jonglei State, Daniel Deng Bul attended Adong Primary School and later studied at Sudan Intermediate School in Khartoum. He received theological training at Bishop Gwynne College in Juba before pursuing leadership studies through CORAT Africa and earning a Diploma in Theology from Virginia Theological Seminary in the United States. In 2008, the seminary awarded him an honorary doctorate for his contributions to peace and reconciliation. He was ordained a deacon in 1977, a priest in 1978, and consecrated bishop in 1988. From 1992 to 2008, he served as Bishop of the Diocese of Renk, while also acting as Caretaker Bishop of Malakal (2000–2003) and Yei (2007–2008). On 14 February 2008, Daniel Deng Bul was elected Archbishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church of Sudan and was enthroned on 20 April 2008 at All Saints Cathedral in Juba. During his leadership, he promoted evangelism, theological education, church unity, and the expansion of dioceses. In 2013, he supported renaming the church to the Province of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan and Sudan following South Sudan's independence. Archbishop Daniel Deng Bul played an important role in national peace efforts. During the 2011 independence referendum, he encouraged peaceful participation and unity. He later chaired the Presidential Committee for Peace, Reconciliation and Tolerance (2012) and the National Committee for Peace, Reconciliation and Healing (2013), leading initiatives aimed at promoting dialogue and healing across South Sudan. Internationally, he became a leading voice within the Global South Fellowship of Anglican Churches and GAFCON, advocating conservative Anglican theology. He retired as Archbishop on 22 April 2018 and was succeeded by The Most Reverend Justin Badi Arama. Married with six children, Archbishop Daniel Deng Bul remains one of South Sudan's most respected church leaders. His legacy is defined by faithful pastoral leadership, commitment to peace and reconciliation, and his lasting contribution to the growth and strengthening of the Episcopal Church in South Sudan.
