Steven Stayner’s story is one of both tragedy and heroism. In 1972, at just 7 years old, Steven was abducted while walking home from school in Merced, California, by Kenneth Parnell, a man posing as a minister. Parnell held Steven captive for seven years, manipulating him into believing his family no longer wanted him. Steven was renamed “Dennis” and lived under Parnell’s control, moving from place to place. Despite enduring years of hardship, Steven’s courage emerged when Parnell kidnapped another young boy, 5-year-old Timothy White, in 1980. Realizing he could not allow another child to endure what he had, Steven made a brave decision. One night, he escaped with Timothy, walking miles to find help. His actions not only saved Timothy but also led to Steven’s own freedom. Steven was reunited with his family after seven years, but adjusting to life back home was challenging. He had missed so much of his childhood and struggled to fit into a world that had moved on without him. Despite these challenges, Steven became an advocate for child safety and worked to prevent abductions. Tragically, Steven passed away in a motorcycle accident in 1989 at the age of 24.
