What do you think about unconditional love between a parent and their child? Specifically the love the parent feels towards their child. I believe it’s the parent’s obligation to accept/love and support their child unconditionally, at least up into adulthood, regardless of their child’s actions. However, I would never expect a child to unconditionally love their parent, that must always be earned because the child did not choose to be on this earth. Would love to hear some thoughts on this!

Aristotle said true virtuous friends have the courage to challenge each other because that’s what love and caring for someone is! There are obviously boundaries to this but my longest standing friendships have made it through honesty and confrontation because it strengthens a relationship in my op

I agree with you. I'm the kind of person who tells things to people directly and politely. I also came from a culture where confrontation is not normalized, but I learned as I grew up to be honest and confrontational. There was one woman whom I valued as a friend, but one day I told her my boundary, and she got defensive and straight-up rude to me. She said she was walking on eggshells, so at this point, I do not want to be her friend if my being confrontational made her feel like she was walking on eggshells and didn't have enough trust to be honest with me. I don't want it. I love a friend who doesn't put me on a pedestal and respects me to tell me if I did something wrong, and challenge me so I could learn and grow.

Ive had few girls on my circle before and called them friends but i realised that in my face they’re saying that you look beautiful, this or that suits you etc and once they turned their back they were rolling their eyes. And I confronted one of them and she said I said I like it for you but i don’t like it. Since that day i didn’t spoke to her anymore.

Love as a feeling can be unconditional. But love as an action cannot be, and neither should it be.

If you wanna be my close friend you have to agree a code of conduct. . Never over thirds. Never ask for an immediate answer. and some more. If I feel you don’t, I’m gone

blaming this on culture is just really immature. i've had that issue with people where they say it's rude to be that direct and honest and say this is what's "proper" in our culture (a whole lotta bs). but i learned just not to bother with these people anymore because it always ends with me finding out they had an issue with something and never told me or finding out that they're talking shit about me behind my back. oh and getting painted as the mean person if i ever bring up anything that bothers me even tho i always try to frame it nicely. honesty is just absurd to them. currently i have friends that are honest and direct with me and i feel like this is the healthiest friendship I've experienced in a long while.

Well, if we have a growth mindset then we require honesty from our friends. Otherwise we are stuck in superficiality and something that is tarnished, doesn't feel genuine. There are many relationships that are tolerated out of necessity, professional. If we want to know and be known we have to be honest. its a gift really.

I think loyalty is really important to me. I don’t know why, or if it’s something specific to female friendships, since I’ve had many more female friends than male ones, but for me, being betrayed by a female friend feels so much more painful.
At the same time, I think I’ve always valued having a certain sense of freedom within friendships. When I was a teenager, I remember feeling trapped by some of the unspoken rules between female friends.

I agree and look for the same, however this is one type of (close) friendship. It can be monotropic to categorise all friendships as based on radical honesty/trust, sometimes you may just enjoy their company. Your friend was also being honest wi you, and it was also negotiating the social contract. A question would be, what made you no accept a middle ground and ambiguity than radical honesty/trust?

But when you quietly decide for yourself that this person is not your friend anymore bc she doesn’t communicate problems… don’t you do the same to this person ? I understand how it would be a reason to end a friendship but ending the friendship with the reason you end it, doesn’t make sense to me. Why not tell her ?

idk if this is any relative to what you’re talking about but for a really long time i felt like i didn’t have any friends. there would be times in my life where i was surrounded by more than two people and i would say “wow i don’t know why i felt so lonely i actually do have friends” but i never really felt like i was that important for their lives or an priority in any way (not that i have to be but…) or felt like we were similar. and recently i had one of those moments where i felt like i had many friends at first and then i argued with one of my friend over a disagreement on an important topic for me. feminism. and i’ve realized that i can’t love people unconditionally just because they are a person. everybody is a person with good and bad qualities. but i need some requests when it comes to letting people in my life. and i feel like this should be a normal thing but people around me seem to not care. i need our values to align on certain topics. nobody needs to be an expert on politics or human rights. i criticize myself about that as well i should read and know more. but to me this is not only about knowledge and also about conscience. and i know that people that i call my friends are not simply “bad people” maybe they just don’t know or they are repeating the learned things in life. but i can’t be their teacher or mentor. i’m only just learning things myself and can’t put my effort to change peoples minds. i feel like i was tolerating people and their behaviors for a really long time so that i won’t be lonely. or just have somebody to do things with. but it feels like every time someone opens their mouth and say something i feel even more alone in the world. maybe i’m taking things too personally or dramatically. idk what i should do. what if i never find people who are “like me”. i feel like i’m a very different person than everyone around me. and i want to move abroad. i also don’t want to be a critic in everyone’s life. nobody can be %100 at anything. are me expectations too high or strict? i care about human connection so much but i cant really build any. i can’t really accept people the way they are. they seem very selfish, anti-woke and brainwashed

What if the honesty is not met with respect? I have a friend that tells me everything she feel is wrong but when I tell her, she gets defensive and tells me I’m in the wrong.

my mom never loved me unconditionally, ans as much as i resented her for it, i also made me learn how to live and enjoy other people without looking for unconditional affection, that came with being able to recognize some patterns in other people that i didnt feel comfortable, im a bit grateful tbh.

I only disagree on unconditional love. I think, children to their parents and pets to their owners do so. Unfortunately.
Besides that I'm with everything you said. Love and friendship need loyalty, honesty, trustworthyness and to accept each other as they are. And time to go through things together, share memories and to bond.
