genuine apologies only works when your partner is mature and reasonable. if your partner is arguing purely based on emotions and/or wanting to win, apologies don't matter at all.

Not just the way we should be saying I’m sorry. This is the way we should be saying thank you and really almost all of our truly deep interactions with others should recognize the emotions around him. I also think it’s not guilt but regret. Guilt is what we feel when we knew what we were doing was wrong. regret comes when we didn’t mean to do it, but realize we were in the wrong after.

When I was growing up when I had to apologize to my brother or sister it wasn't enough to say I'm sorry, we were told to say "I’m sorry and I won't do it again." I realize how important that was because it meant more than an insincere "Sorry", I had the chance to think about not doing it again. Since then I tend to evaluate an apology, deciding whether or not they sound like they will make an effort not to repeat the offense. I keep that to myself but it's usually there.
