@placesoftheplanet: Wrangel Island is one of the most remote and isolated places in Russia, located in the Chukchi Sea off the northeastern coast of the country. Situated deep inside the Arctic, the island covers around 7,600 km² and has no permanent population, making it one of the few places where vast areas of wilderness remain almost completely untouched. Despite its harsh Arctic environment, Wrangel Island supports an incredible amount of wildlife. It is one of the most important polar bear breeding areas in the world and is also home to Arctic foxes, reindeer, walruses and huge colonies of seabirds. The island’s surrounding waters are also important habitats for marine mammals. Wrangel Island is particularly famous for its connection to woolly mammoths. While mammoths disappeared from most of the world thousands of years earlier, a population survived on Wrangel Island until around 4,000 years ago. This means mammoths were still alive on the island around the same time that ancient civilisations were developing elsewhere in the world. The island is now protected as part of the Wrangel Island Nature Reserve and has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its exceptional Arctic ecosystems and wildlife. Its extreme isolation, harsh climate and lack of permanent residents have helped preserve one of the most remarkable wilderness areas on Earth. #hiddenplaces #placesoftheplanet #naturelovers #russia #naturebeauty

How was something so big like woolly mammoths able to find food in that small tundra island and been able to survive up until 4,000 years ago? They must’ve been about as big as the musk ox in that island imo🦣🧊🏔️
