Sidecut radius, one of the more confusing line items on the spec sheet as you’re buying your first snowboard. There are so many variations and you can get real nerdy with this real quick. You’ll see everything from your basic radial sidecut, to progressive side cuts, multiple radius side cuts, and more. As you try more boards throughout your snowboarding you’ll get a better understanding of what these are, and more importantly, how they feel and affect your snowboarding. But here is a very simple explanation to give you the basic idea: Sidecut makes the board turn. Tighter/deeper sidecuts (smaller number/radius) are more nimble feeling and turn more sharply, while longer/shallower side cuts (bigger number/radius) naturally send you into bigger turns and can be more comfortable at high speeds. And if you made it this far, here’s why it’s called sidecut “radius”. Let’s say your board has a 7.5m sidecut. That just means that if you continued the curve on the side of the board to extend into a full circle, that circle would have a radius of 7.5m. So in its simplest terms, the curve in your board is basically just a very small section of a huge circle. If you got some value, share this with a friend who needs a new board this season!
