It started as a joke. Me and my four friends heard about an abandoned lighthouse on a tiny island just outside our town. Everyone said the same thing: “If the light comes on… don’t stay until it finishes turning.” We laughed. There wasn’t even electricity running to the lighthouse anymore. Just before midnight, we took a small boat across the water. The closer we got, the colder it became. The air felt heavy, and the ocean suddenly went completely still. No waves. No wind. No sounds. When we stepped onto the island, the lighthouse door slowly creaked open by itself. None of us touched it. Inside, the spiral staircase disappeared into darkness. Every step echoed so loudly it felt like someone else was climbing with us. Halfway up, one of my friends stopped. “Guys…” On the dusty steps were soaking wet footprints. Bare feet. Huge footprints. They were leading up the stairs. We kept climbing anyway. At exactly 3:13 a.m., the entire lighthouse shook. A loud grinding noise echoed through the tower. The light above us began to rotate. But there was no bulb. Instead, a black beam swept across the ocean. One of my friends looked out the window… …and screamed. Hundreds of people were standing in the water. Not swimming. Not floating. Standing. Every one of them was staring directly at us. Then they all smiled. Their mouths stretched impossibly wide. The beam passed over them again. This time… They were standing at the edge of the island. None of us had seen them move. We ran. As we reached the bottom of the stairs, the front door slammed shut so hard the entire lighthouse shook. We pulled. Kicked. Screamed. It wouldn’t open. Then we heard knocking. Three slow knocks. Not from outside. From inside the walls. Knock… Knock… Knock… One of my friends whispered, “They’re in here.” The knocking spread through the lighthouse. The walls. The ceiling. The floor. Soon it sounded like hundreds of hands were pounding from inside the concrete. Then everything stopped. Silence. A child’s voice echoed through the tower. “Count your friends.” We looked around. One… Two… Three… Four… Five… Then my stomach dropped. There were six of us. Someone was standing between my friends. A tall figure. Soaked from head to toe. Its face was hidden. None of us had noticed it standing there. It slowly lifted its head. Where its eyes should have been… …there were two empty holes filled with moving seawater. It smiled. One of my friends screamed, “RUN!” The lighthouse door suddenly burst open. We sprinted to the boat without looking back. As we pushed away from the island, I counted again. One… Two… Three… Four… Five. We all made it. Or so I thought. When we reached shore, my phone buzzed. It was a picture. Taken from the top of the lighthouse. It showed all five of us running to the boat. Standing in the lighthouse window… …was the sixth figure. Behind the glass, it had written three words. “I LEFT TOO.” I looked up from my phone. My friends were already walking toward their cars. But one of them stopped. Very slowly… He turned his head all the way around. Farther than any person should be able to. Then he smiled. The same smile as the people in the water. #fyp #viral #scarystories #scarytiktoks #scary
