To reiterate, I don’t like respectability politics but I’m also quite grounded in reality so I understand how the average person operates and perceives certain personality types. Therefore, I think it’s the responsibility of people who are the face of a social movement, that is supposed to advance marginalized people, to have a level of awareness regarding their likeability. Because if you are so unlikeable and perceived as combative, obnoxious, untrustworthy, and/or unpleasant, people are going to disagree with your statements, even if fact, simply because they don’t like you. This is extremely reductive when the face of a social movement that is unlikeable has a large platform because now people will make jokes about, and make fun of, the truth that was stated because they view the messenger as a fool to not be taken serious. Idk that’s just me and I can be wrong but it’s worth noting I think #progressive #progressivism #socialmovement #advocacy #leadership
