wouldn't the heat from the grinder change the hardness at the very edge? at the very least you should be quenching as you grind, you can put an edge on anything but only well treated high quality will keep it.

You’re about to get disappointed should you expect getting just a decent blade from this material. This saw blade isn’t old. It’s a modern type with tiny hard metal cutting pieces soldered onto its teeth. The saw blade itself has only minor quality and shouldn’t be even considered making a blade of it. You CAN make a pretty good knife of that material if the saw blade is truly old - just the blade without any hard metal soldered on. These blade were made of a flexible yet decently hard steel which you can harden quite effectively. Not so with such a blade. I wouldn’t call this work a waste of time as long as you learn something from it.
