The second son of King Viserys I Targaryen and Queen Alicent Hightower, Aemond became one of the strongest supporters of his brother Aegon II during the civil war against their half-sister Rhaenyra. His reputation as a warrior, his bond with the enormous dragon Vhagar, and his fierce rivalry with Lucerys Velaryon made him one of the war’s most infamous figures. Aemond was born into the increasingly divided Targaryen royal family. His older brother was Aegon, while his siblings included Helaena, Daeron, and several half-siblings born to Rhaenyra. Although the children belonged to the same dynasty, the political rivalry between Alicent and Rhaenyra created growing tension between them. Aemond grew up surrounded by arguments over succession and the future of the Iron Throne. Unlike his brother Aegon, Aemond was intensely interested in becoming a dragonrider. As a child, he did not possess a dragon of his own, while several of his relatives already had powerful mounts. His desire eventually led him to claim Vhagar, the oldest and largest living dragon in Westeros. Vhagar had previously been ridden by Visenya Targaryen, Laena Velaryon, and other renowned dragonriders. Claiming such a legendary creature dramatically increased Aemond’s importance. Aemond’s childhood rivalry with Rhaenyra’s sons eventually became violent. During a confrontation on Driftmark, Aemond claimed Vhagar shortly after Laena Velaryon’s death. Lucerys Velaryon and Jacaerys Velaryon confronted him, and a fight broke out between the children. Aemond lost his left eye during the struggle when Lucerys attacked him with a knife. From that point onward, Aemond became known as One-Eye. Rather than allowing the loss of his eye to weaken him, Aemond developed an even more intimidating reputation. He wore a sapphire in the empty eye socket, creating one of the most recognizable images of the Dance. His hatred toward Lucerys remained particularly strong, and their childhood conflict eventually contributed directly to the escalation of the civil war. When King Viserys died, Aemond supported his mother and brother’s faction. The Greens crowned Aegon II, while Rhaenyra was proclaimed queen by her own supporters. The competing claims divided the realm and began the Dance of the Dragons. Aemond became one of Aegon’s most important military assets because Vhagar gave the Greens an enormous advantage in aerial warfare. Aemond’s confrontation with Lucerys at Storm’s End became one of the most significant moments of the war. Lucerys arrived on Arrax to seek support for Rhaenyra, while Aemond was already present with Vhagar. The two young men confronted one another after years of hostility. Although Aemond appeared to pursue Lucerys, Vhagar ultimately attacked Arrax and killed both the dragon and its rider. The death of Lucerys had enormous consequences. Rhaenyra’s grief and anger intensified the conflict, and the incident became one of the events that transformed the Dance from a political succession crisis into a brutal war. Aemond’s actions also established him as one of the war’s most feared participants. Aemond later became Prince Regent while Aegon was incapacitated. He attempted to strengthen the Green position through military campaigns and personally participated in battles across the realm. His reliance on Vhagar made him a devastating force, but his aggressive nature sometimes caused him to pursue personal objectives rather than the broader interests of the Green cause. One of Aemond’s most important conflicts was with his uncle Daemon Targaryen. Both were highly skilled warriors and experienced dragonriders, and their rivalry eventually culminated at the Battle Above the Gods Eye. Daemon rode Caraxes while Aemond rode Vhagar.
