From the ancient conflicts of Rome and Greece to the wars between England, France, Spain, Austria, and the many kingdoms of Central and Eastern Europe, warfare has repeatedly transformed its borders and peoples. The Napoleonic Wars reshaped the continent, while the First World War brought unprecedented destruction across France, Belgium, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Serbia, and beyond. Only a generation later, Europe became the heart of an even greater catastrophe: World War II, with Germany invading Poland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, and much of Eastern Europe. Countries such as Italy, Greece, Yugoslavia, Finland, Romania, and Hungary were drawn into the immense conflict, while the Soviet Union fought across the Eastern Front. Europe’s wars also reached far beyond the continent, involving powers such as the United States and Canada, while Mexico contributed to the Allied effort. After 1945, Europe entered a new era dominated by the Cold War, divided between competing powers and ideologies. Yet despite its violent history, Europe gradually moved toward cooperation, integration, and peace. The scars of its wars remain visible in borders, cities, memorials, and national memories, reminding future generations that the continent’s history was built not only through conflict, but also through the difficult pursuit of peace. /// Today marks the 18th year since the last war in Georgia 🇬🇪⚔️ I made a special map just because of it.
