Sometimes gossiping has bad intentions behind it and sometimes people use gossip as a way to connect with others without bad intentions. Not having bad intentions doesn’t mean it doesn’t cause harm though as we all know. ▶️ It can be really difficult as a manager if members of your team gossip to you about people. You may find yourself feeling very uncomfortable, uneasy and annoyed. In these situations our automatic reaction is often to “tell them off” and show our disapproval through judgement. The problem with this is it’s likely to cause shame- behaviour change and shame are not compatible. 💡 Instead I’d recommend respectfully building their awareness around the impact of gossiping on the person/ people in question. This could sound like: “I know these kind of stories can appear exciting. I also know rumours like this can really damage people’s reputation and really hurt them” 🔥 You can also set a boundary. This could sound like: “I need us as a team to refrain from talking about people’s personal business” You can encourage them to speak directly to the person in question if that feels appropriate. 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised.
