@itshannahzhang: Part 2: how top Substack writers are actually growing I went to a party at Substack’s office for paid bestsellers and asked the writers there what was working. Combined with my own experience growing to 27K subscribers in under a year, three things kept coming up: 1️⃣ Use Notes A single Note I wrote about attending the party got 16K views and brought in 85 new subscribers. Almost everyone I spoke to agreed Notes are still underused—which means there’s an opportunity. 2️⃣ Build a growth engine outside Substack Notes help, but many successful writers also have an external channel. Mine is repurposing each newsletter into content for Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn. For a local Upstate New York journalist I met, it was just word of mouth. 3️⃣ Write excellent content for one specific reader Distribution can get people through the door, but it can’t make them stay, pay, or recommend your work.
