@languagegejones: Everyone is missing how to really tell what's AI writing or not. Contrary to popular belief, the best 'tell' is not sentence constructions, certain pet words, or groupings of three #AI #linguistics #LLM #language #languagejones
@Alex: I agree with you directionally but your “just a next token predictor” explanation is outdated enough to harm your argument. While they are not truly thinking in the way humans do, they are much better at approximating it than they were even 2 years ago. Conceivably LLMs could be trained to fix all their current common writing mistakes, but the real problem is they suck at generating things in domains where the outputs are less verifiable. It’s why they are so good at writing code and math and much worse at music and writing.

Yes. My contention is that the reason LLMs seem like they are thinking is that many humans also spend their time making plausibly human statements rather than thinking and it's hard to tell the difference.

And computers are just a bunch of 0s and 1s. What a gross oversimplification

At the end of my time as a summer associate at a law firm, a long time ago, a partner told me I “clearly had the mental horsepower” to be there, but he wanted to make sure I wasn’t “taking on water in the final furlong.” Was I a car? A boat? An actual horse in a race? My favorite mixed metaphor ever. So now I guess I will think of him as a live version of an AI LLM.

That example reads as pretty standard American to me. It seems common enough to "point" any resource at a problem as if the resource were a gun, to treat any benefit as what is "bought" and so on. Throw in our propensity for metaphor salad and, well, that example was coherent in that it communicated. I'm not convinced there is an AI test in there.

I kinda live in my own Sagittarian Roald Dahl world and I kinda love the word salad of AI for the same reason I love Tarot cards. They let me project the meaning in a strange visual way that’s open to interpretation. That does not include delve or amid tho.
