@philosophyminis: Why is it so annoying if somebody gets your name wrong? I used to work with somebody who would always call me John, but my name is Jonny. I have never called myself John, and yet he would persist in calling me that again, and again. If somebody repeatedly, or even deliberately, gets your name wrong, it can range from being frustrating to deeply upsetting. And Hegel can tell us why. Because Hegel argued that everybody needs to be recognised by another consciousness. We need to be seen in the eyes of another because we do not live as islands, but we live connected with other people. But the deeper issue is that we want to be seen by others in the way that we want to be seen. When I say, ‘My name is Jonny,’ that’s how I want others to recognise me. But the wilful and repeated misnaming of somebody is a way to force them into being something you want them to be, and not how you are. Hegel argued that one of the greatest tensions in all human interactions is the struggle between how I want to be seen, and how others want to see me. If somebody calls you lazy, or sporty, or smart, or dumb, that is a projection, and their projection does not match how you want to be seen. And so, names are important. How we present ourselves is important because not only do we need to have an identity, we need that identity to be recognised and seen by others.

Double first name, and it’s hyphenated. People will either call me the first half or abbreviate my name and it’s frustrating. That’s my name, it’s rude to insist not calling me by it.

theres this ugly compliance in letting other people tell you how youre seen, yet for some people (Jonny) im delighted to allow the shifting, the naming and the explaining of my personal worldview. i trust you

Man made a whole video just to snipe back at that one colleague, and used philosophy to do it. I respect it.

I confess I would call you John. This is because I regard Johnny as an informal version of the name John, suggesting familiarity, and I wouldn’t presume to be so familiar. If you made your preference clear, then I call by your preference as a sign of respect.

So what happens if it's never been aggravating to me? Getting my name wrong, my gender or thinking things about me that aren't true?

That would mean that the value of your identity is tied to how someone perceives you? So wouldn't the best approach be to realize that when someone insults( like saying your name wrong) it is coming from a place of malice so why tie your worth to external validation?

I'm an outlier on this one. I think if someone messes my name up or uses another name, I'm still being seen. Lots of the time I'd rather be unseen.

I couldn't care less tbh. I feel no need to be recognised by random people. The only thing I dislike is when someone I hardly know tries to give me a nickname as though we're friends. I'd rather they called me Andrea or something.

Try being Irish. The only fun part is when the most right-on English people inevitably start frothing at the mouth about how we should just spell things normally.

Prefer to be just respected and left alone. To get someone’s name wrong intentionally is different than to avoid saying there name at all. One is lack of respect, the other is respect shown in the form of restraint.
