In 1799, he became the leader of France, and in 1804, he crowned himself Emperor of the French. Under his leadership, France became one of the strongest powers in Europe. Napoleon won many important battles, including the famous Battle of Austerlitz in 1805. Napoleon was not only a military commander but also an important reformer. He introduced the Napoleonic Code, a system of laws that established equality before the law and protected property rights. His reforms influenced legal systems in many countries and remain important today. However, Napoleon's ambition eventually led to his downfall. In 1812, he invaded Russia with a huge army, but the campaign ended disastrously because of resistance, long distances, and harsh conditions. His enemies became stronger, and he was defeated and forced to abdicate in 1814. Napoleon returned to power briefly in 1815, a period known as the Hundred Days. However, he was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo. He was then exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena, where he died on May 5, 1821.
