--- Engfa’s footsteps carried her away from the luxury of the five-star hotel, down the quieting Bangkok sidewalks, until she reached a wooden bench by the Chao Phraya River. The night wind blew softly through her loose white shirt. She sat there alone. In front of her, the river’s surface reflected the city lights in soft blurs. Engfa leaned back, placed both hands on her thighs, and let the silence take over. Inside her chest, she could feel her own heartbeat beating so slow, so heavy, so exhausting. A rhythm that seemed to keep whispering, reminding her that reality had just crashed into her entire life. Charlotte belonged to someone else now. Without a sound, without a sob, a single warm tear slipped from the corner of Engfa’s eye. It slid slowly down her cheek, dripping onto her white shirt. No loud crying. Just pure tears, falling to the rhythm of the most sincere smile Engfa had ever worn. Her heart was shattered into pieces, but her lips still smiled for the happiness of the woman she loved most.
"A plain white shirt, black pants, standing behind a pillar like a love fugitive. Pretty, but so damn pathetic." A familiar voice cut through the silence. The sound of high heels approached before Faye her older sister sat down beside Engfa without asking. Faye was in an equally elegant evening gown. She kicked off her heels right there, then bumped Engfa’s shoulder roughly, but with so much love. "Faye..." Engfa murmured, voice hoarse, not turning her eyes from the river. "I looked for you in the ballroom," Faye teased with a soft laugh, "checked every corner, then saw you run out like the main character in a cheesy drama who failed to stop the wedding." Engfa gave a small shake of her head. "I didn’t run," she replied quietly, her small smile still there even as her tears fell harder onto Faye’s dress. "I just... walked fast." "Same thing, you idiot," Faye whispered. She pulled Engfa into a tight hug, patting her back in a soothing rhythm. "You’re incredible, you know that? You came all the way here, stood in the corner, just to watch her say her vows to that English guy. What do you think this is? A music video?" Engfa let out a small laugh through her tears. A shaky, nasal sound. "She was so beautiful tonight, Phi. Really. Her dress was perfect. And her smile... I’ve never seen her smile that freely before." "Of course she was beautiful. But my sister wasn’t any less pitiful tonight," Faye teased again, forcing herself not to cry seeing her little sister like this. Faye wiped the tears from Engfa’s cheek with her thumb, a little rough until Engfa winced. "Look at you. Even crying you still manage to smile. Are you trying to be a saint or a tragic hero?" "I’m just happy, Faye. I really am," Engfa whispered. "Happy but your tears could flood the whole Chao Phraya," Faye shot back, and that finally made Engfa burst into real laughter. On that cold riverside bench, under the thick Bangkok sky, the two sisters laughed together. A laugh that sounded heartbreaking, mixed with the rest of Engfa’s tears that kept falling. Faye kept throwing out dumb jokes to break the painful silence, while Engfa took every single one as medicine for her bleeding heart. After a while, their laughter slowly faded. All that was left was Engfa’s long exhale it felt lighter. She straightened up and looked straight at the calm ripples on the river, whispering her final words to the woman who would always hold half of her soul. "Be happy in your new place, Char. If in this life my love was only meant to walk you to someone else’s altar, then I’ll gladly love you from afar without asking for anything, without pause, and without ever regretting a single second that I got to have you." _END..._ #charlotteaustin #engfawaraha #englot #au #wlw
