@amir._.antimason: The Parthian Empire (also known as the Arsacid Empire) was founded around 247 BCE by Arsaces I, a nomadic tribal chief from the Parni tribe. They seized Parthia from the Seleucids and declared themselves heirs to the Achaemenid Persians, taking the grand title "King of Kings." The empire truly expanded under Mithridates I (r. 171–138 BCE), who conquered Mesopotamia and pushed the borders from the Euphrates to the Indus. Controlling the Silk Road made them immensely wealthy. The Eternal Rivalry: Parthia vs. Rome The Roman-Parthian conflicts were among the longest in history, dragging on for over 700 years. The Euphrates River was their unofficial border, but neither side ever accepted it. The Disaster at Carrhae (53 BCE): This was Rome's worst humiliation. Marcus Licinius Crassus, the richest man in Rome, invaded Mesopotamia with 36,000 men. Near Carrhae, he met a smaller Parthian force led by the brilliant general Surena. The Parthians used horse archers firing "Parthian shots" (turning back while riding forward) and heavily armored cataphracts (rider and horse in full metal armor). They annihilated the legions. Crassus was killed, and over 20,000 Romans died. Rome never expanded eastward again. The Counter-Invasion (40–36 BCE): In 40 BCE, the Parthians under Pacorus I conquered Syria, Judea, and all of Rome's eastern provinces. In revenge, Mark Antony invaded modern-day Azerbaijan in 36 BCE with a huge army. But the Parthians used scorched-earth tactics, destroyed his siege gear, and rained arrows on his troops. Antony lost over 30,000 men and retreated in shame. The War Over Armenia (58–63 CE): Armenia was the eternal buffer state. Rome invaded in 58 CE because the Parthian king installed his brother on the Armenian throne. After years of brutal guerrilla warfare, they signed the Treaty of Rhandeia (63 CE): a Parthian prince would rule Armenia, but the Roman emperor would crown him – a diplomatic face-saver for both sides. Trajan's Invasion (115–117 CE): Emperor Trajan conquered Mesopotamia and even captured the Parthian capital, Ctesiphon. But these gains didn't last. After Trajan died, the Parthians took everything back. Why Were the Parthians So Deadly? The Parthian army was entirely cavalry-based. They relied on two elite units: Horse archers (light, fast, with powerful composite bows) who could fire forward and backward (the famous "Parthian shot") to confuse and kill enemies. And Cataphracts (heavy shock cavalry – both horse and rider encased in metal armor) who charged with long lances like a rolling iron wall, smashing through Roman infantry lines. They also used feigned retreats and never fought on foot, making them nearly unbeatable on open plains. A Feudal Empire with Fatal Flaws Parthia wasn't a centralized state. It was a loose feudal confederation where the King of Kings had to constantly negotiate with powerful regional nobles. This internal division was their greatest weakness. Constant wars with Rome drained their resources, and nomadic invasions from the east added pressure. The Fall of the Arsacids (224 CE) In 224 CE, Ardashir I, a Persian vassal king from the province of Pars, rebelled against the last Parthian king, Artabanus IV. At the Battle of Hormozdgan, Ardashir defeated and killed Artabanus, overthrew the Parthians, and founded the Sassanian Empire – which would fight Rome (and later Byzantium) for another 400 years#edit#parthian#History #persian#empire
