I’ve realized that as an empath I am drawn to the ugly because it makes me feel like I’m using my powers for good but in reality I’m just subconsciously seeking out things that make me feel less damaged. I need to engage in more beautiful things.

I don't think I agree with that. The reason for our woes I believe is *because* we have abandoned the map of our evolved humanity. The things that make us happy and fulfilled....community, sharing, helping, exploring, creating.... these pay second fiddle to having and consuming, to increasing isolation, hyper individuality, to competition for resource-hoarding. We are smart creatures with simple needs....but the entrenchment of wealth and power for the few requires that we are constantly on edge, divided, overwhelmed. The sad truth is that the dominant constructed map of the world is founded on the development of propoganda and it's use to subvert other humans....that a few humans can control an entire planet of humans.... making them believe that it would be impossible to revoke the constructed order this very afternoon, when it would be the easiest and most natural thing.

I am pretty sure the universe on the grandest scale and the smallest isn't that complex. the universe seems to be exactly and amorphous material heading towards its nonequilibrium maximum entropy point from its minimum entropy point, everything else is coarse graining.
