A lifeguard had a close call with a white shark at Scarborough Beach State Park over the weekend. Daryen Granata said the lifeguard was swimming back to shore Saturday with his hand strapped to a plastic rescue device. “A white shark grabbed hold of the line, or the torp, and pulled the lifeguard down five or six feet underwater,” Granata said. “The lifeguard was able to shed the strap and then he began to swim in.” The lifeguard made it back to shore safely. The incident occurred about 50 yards off the beach. There have been a number of white shark sightings in the area within the last week. Granata said the town is flying drones over the beaches, and rangers are on Pine Point Beach surveying the water. Others are on jet skis monitoring the ocean, Granata said. The public is being advised to stay aware of their surroundings and obey instructions from lifeguards if they go to the beach, Granata said. People should also avoid swimming near seals and schools of fish or areas where birds are actively feeding. And Granata said people should not wear shiny objects if they do go in the water. “Over at Scarborough Beach and the other beaches, they’re telling people don’t go in more than hip or waist deep water,” he said. “We’re not seeing the sharks in waist-deep water. We’re seeing them mostly in five-to-six feet of water, eight feet of water. But that doesn’t mean that they can’t come in that close.” Meantime, beaches at Reid State Park in Georgetown were closed to swimming Monday due to multiple recent shark sightings. State park officials say there has been a heavy presence of seals and baitfish close to shore and numerous shark sightings near Mile, Half Mile and East Beaches over the last few days. The beaches were also closed to swimming on Sunday, Saturday afternoon and part of Friday due to a shark sighting off Mile Beach, according to the town of Georgetown. The state is urging the public to report shark sightings to the Department of Marine Resources or using the app, Sharktivity. ✍️: Nicole Ogrysko 🎥: 2025 drone footage of white shark in Saco Bay courtesy of David Lancaster
