People can't actually think, that Joel, a person he never asked to have, asked to care for, saved her countless times, got to finally give her the life she never had in his own way was going to let her be killed to "save humanity". Their was no way of saving humanity, the fireflies were looking for the only option they had, killing his stepdaughter to maybe have hope. Absolutely no father or anyone who has ever thought of someone like a daughter would let that happen and you're deluded if you think they would. Ellie was young, lost people and didn't want to live anymore basically, so of course she was gonna be hurt and etc, but deep down she loved him and she only saw that after she saw him get killed, it's madness how people can't understand that after years of the game being out 😂
