That person was his 12-year-old half-brother, Austin Tapia, who had been home alone with Ward while other family members went out to dinner. Police found Austin inside the home with multiple stab wounds. Ward waited at the convenience store until officers arrived. He had blood on his clothing and was carrying a knife. When investigators later asked why he killed Austin, Ward gave a disturbing explanation: “Honestly, I just felt like killing.” But the case didn’t end there. Just three weeks later, while awaiting trial in the Lower Buckeye Jail, Ward killed his 33-year-old cellmate, Douglas Walker. Ward admitted to that killing as well. In 2017, Ward pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and was ultimately sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole.
