we sometimes may get put into a similar mindset as the trauma after a trigger(usually a phrase or it can sometimes just happen) where it feels like we are back in that situation

I have a few characters who have PTSD but I've been hesitant to actually use them because I don't fully understand PTSD, so thank you for this video!

I've done pretty extensive research on PTSD, and from what I know(correct me if I'm wrong) sometimes flashbacks can bring good memories mixed with the trauma, for example I had a character who's favorite meal while serving in the military was lasagna, he recounted how it the smell brought him back to an active warzone but the shining light was that he and his squad mates we're sharing a lasagna while cracking jokes, it was traumatic hearing the bullets crack by their heads, but it was also a positive experience because he was sharing a moment with his friends

PTSD also impacts relationships consider how a characters trauma or a trigger not only effects them but others, are others going to be supportive? Cruel? Do they have a support system and don’t forget to consider a characters coping mechanisms are they healthy or are they destructive?

People also experience regression in PTSD and a lot of people don’t even know about that. You’re 12 years old and you’re assaulted by a male relative. 20 years later, a man in a bar grabs you in the same way, and suddenly, you’re 12 again. It takes forever to grow up again when that happens.

I have CPTSD so there is no one event for me to be taken back to, it's literal years of my life spent suffering daily. it's still condensed into flashbacks, somatic and visual, but not really fully narrative. for example, I was homeless for a year, and it's a lot of still images of what my "living space" was like mixed with the long drawn out emotions being compressed into the few images. externally, you can see me dissociate. I look off to the side at nothing, often with a slightly wider stare, but I'm very much not present.
I have specific events that do play more narratively though, some of the bits are just missing

Cptsd here, adding onto the unawareness some people don’t know exactly what triggers them even if they’re fully aware of what happened to them. For me even though i remember majority of what happened in my past, sometimes triggers can happen sporadically and cause even more anxiety because I can’t identify what exactly has triggered me

Having C-PTSD and then writing a character with the same condition, not only is it helpful to help understand the condition from a controlled outside perspective. He randomly has the smell of gutting a deer at times as one of his hallucinations. Visually, if he stares into a dark space for too long or a tree line, his mind will start to fabricate and see a stag with its antlers, staring back at him🦌

anniversary flashbacks are the worst. sometimes you don't even know what the anniversary is from. sometimes it's the people around you that notice. I didn't know that I am an emotional mess in November until my brother/best friend pointed it out.
