That's the perspective I'm trying to get people to see. Something can be labeled “ancient” and our brains automatically place it in some completely unreachable past, when in reality you're only talking about a relatively small chain of human generations. Take the early 1700s. At 20 years per generation, that's only around 15–16 generations. That's basically a handful of parent-to-child links compared with how enormous “ancient history” sounds in our heads. I'm not saying the history isn't real or that the timeline is automatically wrong. I'm saying that translating years into human generations makes the past feel MUCH closer and that's what people seem to find surprising.
