@mediamix30: How much money should you actually have saved for an emergency? Your emergency fund should be based more on your essential monthly expenses than your salary, but your income can still provide a helpful starting point for setting a savings goal. This guide shows emergency fund benchmarks across different salary levels and what 3, 6, and 12 months of savings could look like. A smaller emergency fund may work for someone with stable income and few financial obligations, while someone with variable income, dependents, or higher fixed expenses may want a larger safety net. The goal isn’t to build it overnight. Start with your first $1,000, work toward one month of essential expenses, and continue building from there. Keeping that money somewhere safe and accessible, such as a high-yield savings account, can also allow your emergency savings to earn interest while you wait. 🔖 Save this chart and use it as a benchmark while building your emergency fund. the reality is tho, we don't need 180k to survive. if we lose our jobs, I don't need 6 months of my current salary to stay afloat because I'm sure as shit not going to be vacationing, going out to dinner, etc and keeping my current lifestyle. I just need enough on my emergency fund to pay my mortgage, keep the utilities on, put gas in my car, and feed and clothe my family. why keep more in a HYSA than you need when you can be using that money for other things/investing that money in places that will give you a higher return

In reality it should be based on your expenses rather than income. We spend about 50% of our net take home pay. So I don’t need to base my savings number on the income.
