Robert Piché had learned to fly as a teenager and become a bush pilot, landing small planes on short, rough strips, often in bad weather. He flew gliders too, learning what an aircraft does when nothing is pushing it forward. None of it mattered now. His airline had laid him off, and a young man with no work had made the worst decision of his life: flying smuggling runs. He was caught, and he spent 16 months in an American prison. He came out with a record and a career in ashes. Nobody would have bet a dollar on him. He spent the next decade clawing his way back, flight by flight. In 1995, Air Transat hired the 43-year-old with a past. They knew. They took the chance anyway. In 2000, he was granted a pardon. Neither he nor they knew what that chance would one day buy. August 24, 2001. Captain Robert Piché was about 4 hours into Air Transat Flight 236, a night crossing from Toronto to Lisbon with 306 people behind him, when a fuel line ruptured over the middle of the Atlantic. The right engine died. 13 minutes later, the left one followed. The Airbus was now a glider. And in the left seat sat a man who had flown gliders, landed on rough strips in bad weather, and already rebuilt his life once. With First Officer Dirk de Jager running the numbers beside him, Piché glided that dead airliner 75 miles through the dark and put it down at Lajes in the Azores, hard and fast, blowing 8 tires. All 306 people survived. Investigators later traced the leak to a maintenance error and found the crew's early handling of it had made things worse, but for what the 2 pilots did after the engines stopped, both received the Superior Airmanship Award from the Air Line Pilots Association. He never denied his past. After the landing, he got help for his own struggles. Then he flew 16 more years, and built a foundation for people fighting their way back from the things that once nearly destroyed him. The prison cell was supposed to be the end of his story. Instead it was the training. The engines quit that night. Robert Piché never did.
