We will be on our 10th/11th back to back. We started “pre-paying” gratuities on our last 6. I agree that we don’t see where it’s going, but in good faith, you assume it does. It’s a vacation, and pay cash to the people you believe get extra. They’re on contract, and as consumers we don’t get to see everything, but that extra $200 for grat, guarantees us a good vacation, and those we see directly deserve the cash. Don’t remove it. Plan for it.

Employees get paid a set salary. No more, no less. The cruise line uses those prepaid gratuities to pay the employee salaries so they don’t have to. Now, if there is not enough in that prepaid gratuity ‘pot’ then the cruise line will make up the difference of course, but the gratuities do not get distributed on top of their salaries. If you want your server or anyone else to get a tip, you pay in cash specifically to that employee.

I never understood pre pay gratuity. How do you know in advance how service will be?

If everyone takes off the gratuities the cruise companies are just going to up the prices of the cruises.

I don't remove them because they are so little anyway. I also give cash tips throughout the cruise

Welp, Royal Caribbean is just gonna start adding that gratuity money directly to the cost of the trip and we’ll never know… either way RC gonna get paid!

So what about the people in the background doing the work and not seeing the cash tip you gave to the people you actually see face-to-face? Like the guys doing your laundry or the guys washing your dishes or the guys cleaning areas that you never see?

I consider prepaid gratuities just as part of the cost of the cruise. I still tip cash for good service. I'm not wasting time standing in line at guest services.

My friend and I are going on carnival Mardi Gras in February. We removed our gratuities but we discovered that there is automatic 18-20% gratuities everytime we get a drink while on the cheers package if we don’t have automatic gratuities. So we will be adding the gratuities back on, and then tipping extra to our servers/room cleaner…. No way I’m getting stuck having to tip for every drink I get

They are mandatory. They make you pay a set amount no matter what. If you pay it directly in cash the company will make you pay again.

We have always just left them on and also tip cash to our cabin steward, dinning room team (that we eat at for dinner) and bartenders even though we get drink package and it’s already added in. But you mean if I remove the gratuities my cabin steward and dinning room team will still make the same amount of money? You are saying they don’t get the gratuity’s that we are paying? I don’t know if I believe that…. I would need to see prove and that’s probably impossible to prove!

Honestly, this is old news. We’ve not been prepaying for years, and we have always gotten them removed on the ship. Every cruise line we’ve been on. How people didn’t question this before is beyond me. Also, if you go to the Spa, they will add gratuities on after your service. You can also have those removed.

We cruise all the time. Just got off the Mariner few weeks ago. So how exactly do we do this. I thought it’s a bill that has to be paid before ( we do ) or end of cruise. We tip the people who bring us a drink cash and tip the house keeper extra at end of cruise

There are so many options out there now. Why choose to patronize a cruise line that makes it so complicated?
