‼️ THE UNCOMFORTABLE PART OF THE CHRISTA PIKE STORY Christa Pike was convicted of the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer and sentenced to death. But there is another part of Pike’s story that deserves to be discussed. According to a 2023 forensic evaluation and documents submitted in her clemency case, Pike experienced severe sexual abuse and neglect beginning in childhood, including repeated abuse when she was very young, rape at age 11, abuse by adults in her home and another rape as a teenager. Her psychologist, Dr. Bethany Brand, described the history as extraordinarily severe trauma. None of that erases what happened to Colleen Slemmer. Court records describe a horrifying murder, and Pike was convicted by a jury for her role in it. But it raises an uncomfortable question: When someone commits a horrific crime after experiencing years of extreme childhood abuse, how should that history factor into the punishment? Pike was 18 when Slemmer was killed. Tadaryl Shipp was 17 and therefore could not receive the death penalty. He remains imprisoned today. Now, after Tennessee's failed attempt to execute Pike, her case is receiving international attention again. Two things can be true at the same time: Colleen Slemmer deserved justice. And the abuse Christa Pike experienced as a child was also horrific.
