@goatcult.media: In September 1978, 15-year-old Mary Vincent was hitchhiking through California when she accepted a ride from Lawrence Singleton, a 50-year-old man driving a van. Mary became suspicious when Singleton began taking her away from the route they had agreed on and eventually tried to escape. Singleton attacked and sexually assaulted Mary before using a hatchet to sever both of her forearms. He then threw her down a roughly 30-foot embankment, believing she would die there. But Mary survived. She packed her wounds with mud to slow the bleeding, climbed back up the embankment and walked for miles until she was finally spotted and taken to a hospital. She was able to describe Singleton and later identified him in court, helping secure his conviction. Despite the severity of the attack, Singleton served only about eight years in prison because of California’s sentencing laws at the time. Years after his release, he murdered another woman, Roxanne Hayes, in Florida and was sentenced to death.
