The trip was supposed to end with a proposal. Hidden inside Lena's backpack was a small velvet box she'd checked at least twenty times that morning. Miu had caught her smiling to herself more than once. "What?" Miu asked suspiciously. "Nothing." "Lena..." "I'm literally just looking at my girlfriend." "You're being weird." "I'm always weird." Miu rolled her eyes, but a smile escaped anyway. "You're lucky you're pretty." "I know." They had spent a week sailing through crystal-blue waters, hopping from one island to another. No phones. No work. No interviews. No meetings. Just the two of them. Lena had planned every detail. The final sunset. A quiet beach. A candlelit dinner. Then she'd ask the question she'd been rehearsing for months. On the morning they were supposed to sail back to the mainland, the weather changed. The captain frowned at the dark clouds gathering on the horizon. "We should leave now." The sea was calm when they departed. An hour later... It wasn't. Rain slammed against the deck. The wind howled. Waves rose higher than the yacht itself. Passengers screamed as the boat lurched violently. "Miu!" "I'm here!" Lena fought against the wind, reaching for her. Their fingers met. For one brief second, Lena thought she'd made it. Then a massive wave crashed over the side. The force ripped them apart. "Miu!" "Lena!" The last thing Lena saw was Miu disappearing beneath the black water. When Lena opened her eyes... Everything smelled like antiseptic. A hospital. She tried to sit up. Pain shot through her body. "Miu..." No one answered. Her parents rushed to her bedside. They looked relieved. They also looked terrified. "Where's Miu?" Silence. "Lena..." "Where's Miu?" The doctor lowered his head. "The search is still ongoing." The search lasted twenty-three days. The coast guard searched hundreds of square kilometers. Divers descended into waters too dangerous for ordinary rescue teams. Helicopters flew until there was nowhere left to look. Nothing. No body. No life jacket. No belongings. Not even the engagement ring. On the twenty-fourth day... The search was officially suspended. The report contained only one sentence. Missing at sea. Presumed dead. Lena stared at those words until the ink blurred beneath her tears. "No." She whispered it at first. Then louder. "No!" She crumpled the report in her hands. "She's out there." "You just didn't look hard enough." No one knew how to answer her. Because sometimes... The ocean doesn't return what it takes. The funeral was held without a body. Lena refused to wear black. She stood in front of an empty casket, her hands shoved deep into the pockets of the suit Miu had once picked out for her. "I look too serious in this," Lena had complained while trying it on. Miu had laughed. "You always look serious." "I don't." "You do." "...Fine." That had been six months before the trip. Now it was the last thing Lena could remember without it hurting. People hugged her. "I'm sorry for your loss." "She's in a better place." "You have to be strong." Lena thanked them politely. The moment she got home, she locked herself in the bedroom and broke down. The engagement ring was still inside the velvet box. She couldn't even look at it. The years crawled by. Lena stopped sailing. Stopped filming documentaries. Stopped celebrating birthdays. The woman who had once chased the sea now couldn't stand the sound of waves. She moved to a small apartment overlooking the city instead of the coast. Anywhere but the ocean. Yet every night... She dreamed of the storm. Every night... She woke up hearing Miu scream her name. Five years later. Lena had finally returned to work as a photographer. She preferred quiet assignments now. No oceans. No boats. Just people. One afternoon, she was covering a small maritime exhibit at a local museum. She wandered absentmindedly through the displays until an old photograph caught her eye. It showed a tiny fishing village on a remote island. Ordinary enough... Except for one detail. Standing near the dock was a woman. Continuation ⬇️
